Terminology Candidate This is the person who undertakes the NVQ or the NVQ units. Assessor This is the person who will judge the performance of the candidate against the NVQ criteria. Assessors have to be technically competent in the area they are to assess in and have to be working towards their own qualifications - units D32 and D33. Internal Verifier This is the person who makes sure that the assessors are doing their job properly, for example, that assessors are treating candidates the same and are not over or under-assessing. The internal verifier will look at the assessments undertaken by the assessors to make sure candidates have been treated fairly. Internal verifiers have to be technically competent in the area they are to verify in and have to be working towards their own qualification - unit D34. Mentor/Advisor This is a person who may be assigned to help candidates to collect and identify evidence that proves that the candidate is competent to the NVQ standards. This person differs from an assessor in that they will not make judgements about the candidate’s competence, this is left to the assessor. The mentor/advisor speeds up the process of assessment and allows the assessors to concentrate on assessing. A mentor/advisor needs to be familiar with the NVQ approach and the philosophy of NVQs. There is a qualification which mentors/advisors can work towards achieving - unit D36. External Verifier This is the person who, on behalf of the awarding body CABWI, makes sure the internal verifier and his or her assessment team is doing their job properly. CABWI employs external verifiers to visit each of its NVQ centres to ensure that they are undertaking the qualifications properly. The external verifier will want to talk to candidates, assessors and internal verifiers during the course of his or her visits. The external verifier also has to be qualified and will either have, or be working towards gaining a qualification - unit D35 .
