Who are NVQs for?

Who are NVQs designed for?

NVQs are available to anyone at any age or stage of their career - and there are no entry qualifications. NVQs are flexible and accessible - within reasonable limits, you can decide the pace, place and way in which you learn.

Most people working towards an NVQ are in work but they are available to others through a number of initiatives.

Young people still in full-time education

Most young people stay on in full time education for two or more years after age sixteen. This is usually publicly-funded further education colleges and schools. Many are doing general qualifications and hoping to go on to higher education, but many others are studying for vocational qualifications such as, NVQs and GNVQs.

Young people wishing to start work

Some young people do not want to stay in full time education, but need some preparation before they can start work. The Government has several initiatives to help them train for work and achieve NVQs:

Modern Apprenticeships use the traditional link between an apprentice and an employer and offers training leading to NVQ Level 3 or higher.

New Deal offers young people who have been unemployed for 6 months or more the opportunity to study or train for an NVQ or other approved vocational qualification for up to 1 year.

Unemployed Adults

The Government has a commitment to help unemployed adults off welfare and into work. This commitment includes a range of initiatives designed to help people gain employment and self employment, as well as particular training programmes. Work Based Training for Adults, for example, aims to help long term unemployed people and others who are at a disadvantage in the labour market to secure and sustain employment or self employment. It offers individually tailored guidance, structured work experience, training and working towards approved qualifications including NVQs.
